Artist Statement
 
My work explores the spaces in between gender, power, sensuality, religion, identity, and impermanence. These two bodies of work were created in the last few years as studies of the figure in different aspects
 
My paintings are inspired by Christian iconography, the Takarazuka Revue, combat sports, and persimmons. Painting on paper these works are modes of visual thinking. Sometimes in order to work out color compositions, ideas for a new theme, or exploring my subconscious. There is something immediate about working small scale on paper. It retains some spontaneity and energy from the original impulse. 
 
I began working in ceramics in 2023 and it has provided me with a new path to explore historical cross-cultural influences, rococo flamboyance, and visceral tragedy. I create fragmented body parts that reflect an attempt to deal with human fragility and impermanence. These are often decorated in blue and white floral patterns with metallic glazes sometimes referencing kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pieces with gold, which draws attention to the destruction while making it beautiful.

私の作品は、ジェンダー、権力、官能性、宗教、アイデンティティ、そして無常の間にある空間を探求しています。この 二つの作品は、人物をさまざまな側面から研究するものとして、ここ数年に制作されました。
 
私の絵はキリスト教の図像、宝塚歌劇、武道、柿からインスピレーションを受けています。紙に絵を描くこれらの作品は、視覚的思考のモードです。時には色の構成を考えたり、新しいテーマのアイデアを考えたり、自分の潜在意識を探求したりするためです。紙の上で小規模に作業することには、何か即効性があります。元の衝動からの自発性とエネルギーがいくらか残っています。
 
私は 2023 年に陶芸の仕事を始めましたが、それは歴史的な異文化の影響、ロココの華やかさ、そして本能的な悲劇を探求するための新しい道を私に提供してくれました。私は人間の脆弱性と無常性に対処する試みを反映する断片的な体の部分を作成します。これらは、多くの場合、メタリック釉薬を使用した青と白の花柄で装飾されており、壊れた部品を金で修復する日本の芸術である金継ぎを参照することもあり、それを美しくしながら破壊に注目を集めます。
 
 
 
 
 
Biography
 
Chalice Mitchell is a figurative painter based in Western Massachusetts. They were raised mostly in Maine and Vermont and have lived in British Columbia, New York, Oregon, Colorado, Florida, the West Midlands, UK, as well as Kyushu and Shikoku, Japan.

Chalice has exhibited internationally, including shows in Tokyo, London, New York, Moscow, Athens, Wellington, and Vancouver. They have attended residencies in Japan, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States. They have received grants from the Artist Resource Trust Fund, the Northern Berkshire Cultural Council, Mass Cultural Council, the Martha Boschen Porter Fund, the Carving Studio & Sculpture Center, Assets for Artists at MASS MoCA, and the College Arts Association. Chalice has a BFA from Ringling College of Art & Design and an MFA from the University of South Florida.

チャリス・ミッチェルはマサチューセッツ州西部を拠点とする具象画家です。主にメイン州とバーモント州で育ち、ブリティッシュコロンビア州、ニューヨーク州、オレゴン州、コロラド州、フロリダ州、英国のウェストミッドランズ、そして日本の九州や四国にも住んでいました。
 
チャリス は、東京、ロンドン、ニューヨーク、モスクワ、アテネ、ウェリントン、バンクーバーでの展示会など、国際的に展示を行ってきました。日本、イタリア、イギリス、アメリカでレジデンスに参加してきました。自分の作品を支援するために多くの助成金を受け取っています。リングリング芸術デザイン大学を卒業し、南フロリダ大学で修士号を取得しました。
