The artist who grew up in a medical institution returns to her own origin and presents her new installation consisting of old medical equipment,  photo, paintings and video.

Kamma has developed her artistic expression mainly through installation and performance and has participated in many art and performance festivals held in Europe, Canada, US, Africa and Japan. In her works, a consistent state of “abandonment” is exhibited. Here the exhibited objects, including goods, texts, sounds and images appear seemingly unrelated to each other, yet function as a form of mirror reflecting the audience’s internal thought, creating a new poetic association between each fragment through the consciousness of the audience.

‘Abandoned Desire Fetishism’ by Keiko Kamma

Hidehiko Mizuno,  Art Critic

Keiko Kamma is showing photos, paintings installation and moving images, under the title of ‘Abandoned Desire Fetishism’. Keiko Kamma who grew up in a doctor’s family environment is employing the medical equipment from the warehouse at her home and building installation using them.

In 1995 she once abandoned paintings that she had involved in for a long time totally and created her first installation (Click/crack ’95 at Ono Gallery Ginza).  On that occasion, she randomly lay-outed various wastes having no relationship to each other, with exhibiting the photo series, ‘Ready-made’ Phenomena.  It was actually ‘throw-out’ rather than juxtaposition. In other words, even in this process of exhibiting, she strategically interposed a kind of the concept of ‘abandonment.

‘Mainly in the situation of neglected objects on the streets, I often find perfect compositions and beauty of color and started to take pictures of them. There was actually beautiful scenery filled with natural dynamism more than paintings and sculptures created on purpose.  These works bore a fruit as e photo series, (‘Ready-made’ Phenomena) then it became an origin of consequential installation works.’ (Keiko Kamma)
In the series of ‘Ready-made’ Phenomena, she was trying to find pure art in objects exist on the street or common places in advance and she collected the actual images of neglected objects by camera function and in her first full scale installation, (Click/crack ’95 1995), she randomly scattered actual waste (or something like real) on the exhibiting space.
‘I probably felt waste (or something like real) was actually beautiful. I analyze this exhibiting was something like Ikebana, Japanese flower-arrangement consisted of garbage and wastes in hindsight. (Keiko Kamma)
In this exhibition, she returns to her starting point of installation, and developed installation as the process of creation, similar to ’Ikebana’ philosophy. She is employing stuff collected from her home as homey medical tools, which have sometimes played as important roles in her art creation and constructing installation using other stuff, photos, paintings and moving images as well.

She considers ‘desire’ as binder between ‘abandoned’ and ‘fetishism’, but here, ‘desire’ is not suggesting Freudian interpretation but implying the prototype or homeostasis, which will be found on the bottom level of semantic generation and it would be better to think that it is activated by the power of ’Sensitivity’ which is at the opposite end of ’Understanding’.  We may see her ’Sensitivity’ is closely and intricately related to her specific experience of watching patients’ lives and death, dying scenes and wonders of life since a small child as a daughter of the town doctor.
On-the-site of Depublication and Art, ’Fetishism’ which is rooted in neglect is forming a multi layered nested container and will return to the place of pureness, which the artist is claiming ‘Abandoned Desire Fetishism’ by the power of memory and empirical rule or ’Sensitivity’.
